Topic 4 Learning Objectives. By the end of this week you should be able to:

  • Describe the process of creating a multimedia project plan to a friend
  • Be able to explain the key reasons why creating a multimedia project plan -before- creating multimedia content is so important
  • Create a sample project plan for a topic or tool you are interested in
  • Transform the instructional video that you made last week into an interactive learning object with embedded multiple-choice questions

Introduction to Topic 4

This topic will introduce you to the key points you will need to know to create an effective multimedia project (or lesson) plan and should also be helpful as you create multimedia learning objects every week. Please note that you will need to create a multimedia project plan as part of Assignment 4, so this week will be a good preparation for your major project.

This topic will also give you an overview of the Multimedia Design process which is intended to be a foundational element that you can use as you create your own multimedia objects, using the Principles of Multimedia Learning.

The Multimedia Design Process for a Lesson Plan – by Kevin Alexander

When it comes time to select the most appropriate tool or technology to help meet each of each learning objectives I find it helpful to use Bates’ SECTIONS model to help evaluate the appropriateness of a particular technology. Bates’ model prompts us to critically look at each technology in light of:

  • Student impact
  • Ease of use
  • Costs
  • Teaching functionality
  • Interaction possibilities
  • Organizational support
  • Networking opportunities
  • Security and privacy

Multimedia Project Plan Activity

Review this sample project plan I’ve created. It gives an example of the amount of detail you should aim for in creating your own unique project plan. Multimedia Project Plan – Example (Google Doc).

Now let practice creating a project plan for something fairly simple like teaching someone how to use the Saanich Carbon Calculator:

Please make your own project plan to plan out how to teach something that you are interested in (it could even be based on the topic that you used to make your screencasting video last week). Note that you are only making the lesson plan, not the whole lesson!

Please make a copy of this Example Multimedia lesson plan and then edit it to make your own lesson plan (see the animated GIF below if you’re unsure about how to make a copy of a Google Doc):

Interactive Videos with H5P Activity:

H5P multiple-choice questions embedded in a video are a great way to help learners stay more engage and well as help them self-assess so that know if they understand the video instruction or not.

  • Please work through the following H5P and use the screencast video you created last week to add at least one information pop-up in the video and two multiple-choice questions to your video: https://bit.ly/dsc-h5p-activity-1

Tasks & Assignments This Week:

  1. Blog Post 4 using the following blogging prompts:
    • Embed at least one H5P video in your blog post along with at least one other multimedia object (photos, videos, infographics etc). Note: one of the activities in Topic 4 walks you through the process of creating an interactive H5P video.
    • List and briefly discuss the multimedia principles that directly relate to videos with embedded multiple-choice questions
    • Describe the key reasons why creating a multimedia project plan -before- creating multimedia content is so important
    • Attach or link to the multimedia project plan you created.
